Yo Yo is an artist collective founded in 2022 based in Milwaukee, WI. We work in performance and installations
focusing on ancestral tradition and storytelling through a diasporic lens. Our work seeks to engage critically with audiences and foster conversations within the community.
Rooted in memory and recollection, we are constantly faced with questions of migration and belonging.
What responsibilities do those entering a space have in respecting its existing memories and purpose? Can you fully belong to multiple places, communities, or identities at once? Can belonging exist without conformity, or does it always require compromise?
As a way to preserve fragments of past experiences—such as shared family meals—we honor them through repetitive movements.
Like the Yo Yo, an object that moves back and forth when played. This motion parallels the origin and intention of the collective as we find ourselves engaging with the public while perpetually going inwards and outwards.
